About Mount Elgon National Park
An exhilarating journey through Mount Elgon National Park leads to the peak and the breathtaking 40km caldera of Mount Elgon. Along the way, you will come across some very remarkable sights and sounds, like mountain antelopes, uncommon birds, unique species of plants and animals, little rivers, and caverns. Birdwatchers and photographers will love the national park because it is home to 300 different bird species.
There are a number of hiking paths to choose from, each offering stunning scenery and the possibility of exciting new experiences.
Beginning in Sipi and ending in Bushiyi, the Sipi trail forms a somewhat difficult circuit. This trek may be hiked in four to five days. Though brief, the Bushiyi path packs a powerful punch in just three or four days. One of the longest and most accessible hiking trails is the Piswa. The journey from Piswa to Bushiyi takes around five or six days.
If you’re short on time, but still want to see Mount Elgon National Park, the day hiking tour departs at the Kapkwai Exploration Center. The upper parts of Mount Elgon, which lies on the Ugandan-Kenyan border, are a Man and Biosphere Reserve designated by UNESCO.
