Detailed 5 Days Rwenzori Hike Itinerary

Day 1: Nyakalengija (1600m) to John Matte Hut (3420m)

Your 5 Days Rwenzori Hike Itinerary Margherita begins at the Rwenzori Trekking Experts offices in Nyakalengija, where you’ll be briefed and equipped for the trek the briefing includes an introduction of the team of guides and porters who will be accompanying you in the mountains. With your guides and porters ready, you’ll start your hike through village of Nyakalengeji and into the lush tropical forests. The journey continues into montane forests and bamboo forests. Midway through, you’ll stop at Nyabitaba Hut for lunch. Rejuvenated and energized, you’ll cross the Kurt Schaffer Bridge over the Mubuku and Bujuku Rivers with. Take sure and determined steps through steeply ascents and rugged rocks. As evening approaches, you’ll reach John Matte Hut, where you’ll enjoy dinner and spend the night, surrounded by the serene alpine environment.

Day 2: John Matte Hut to Elena Hut (4563m)

After breakfast at John Matte Hut, you’ll embark on a challenging hike through rocky and slippery terrain, crossing various rivers and streams. Along the way, you’ll catch distant views of Margherita and Alexandra Peaks. The route takes you through the lower Bigo Bog, where boardwalks make navigation easier. The route is promising of unique vegetation and here you will encounter giant lobelias , groundsels and the beautiful everlasting flowers in the alpine zone walking through rocky areas of mount Stanley. Upon arrival at Ellena hut after such a hectic yet rewarding day you will enjoy a hot dinner , ensure to keep warm as the temperatures are here are so low and there could be harsh winds at times, spend a night before the summit day ahead of you.

Day 3: Elena Hut to Margherita Peak (5109m) to Bujuku Hut (3930m)

The summit day begins early, around 4 a.m., with your gear and headlamps as you source of light and probably the moon . You’ll start your ascent through the rocky terrain led by your experienced guide who will direct you every step all the way, with the direction of the guides you will be using ropes in certain sections to navigate the Stanley Glacier. Crampons will be essential here as well to traverse the icy part. After crossing the glacier, you’ll remove the crampons and continue climbing through the rocky areas to the Margherita Glacier. Day 4: Bujuku Hut to Nyabitaba Hut (2660m)

Following breakfast at Bujuku Hut, you’ll start your descent through the upper Bigo Bog, then proceed through the lower Bigo Bog to John Matte Hut for a rest and lunch. The trail continues tracing the very steps you used as you ascended, the slopping journey is quite faster and less hectic as compared to when you are climbing. You start to breath better and even the air is thicker unlike the thin air encountered at Ellena camp. Desscend to Nyabitaba Hut, where you’ll have dinner and spend the night , enjoying your last evening in the mountains.

Day 5: Nyabitaba Hut to Nyakalengija

After breakfast at Nyabitaba Hut, you’ll embark on the final leg of your journey that takes you through the lush forest in the montane zone the base of mountain Rwenzori, descending back to Nyakalengija where you will then head to your next destination. This marks the end of your trek, a journey filled with stunning landscapes, incredible views , diverse ecosystems, and the thought of reaching one of Africa’s highest peaks which is not any usual thing but a unique experience that is overcome with determination and resilience.
