Rwenzori Trekking Routes/Circuit/Trails
Starting from Nyakalengija and Kilembe, respectively, three trekking circuits lead to the summits of the Rwenzori Mountain Range. Although Professor Scott Elliott mainly followed the Southern Circuit in 1895, for a long time the only way to reach the Alps was via the central circuit, which was initially laid out by Luigi di Savoia in 1906.
Only the Southern Circuit, Central Circuit, and Bukurungu Trail treks are organized by Rwenzori Trekking Services. The reason behind this is that it offers a very powerful and breathtaking view of surreal landscapes. Acclimatization (and the trip as a whole) can be facilitated by the southern circuit’s lengthier itineraries.
Rwenzori Kilembe Trail:
Rwenzori trekking services now own and run the Kilembe path, which offers a 7-8 day excursion starting at 1450m and includes a first-day traverse of the beautiful highlands and a first-night stay at Kalalama camp at 3147m. Another option for hikers is the Kilembe track, which is more challenging than the Central Circuit path to reach Margherita Peak. Do not attempt this hike if you are not an experienced hiker; it is really demanding.
The Bukurungu Trail:
On the Bukurungu Trail, you may embark on a thrilling trek through the Rwenzori Mountains, where you will see breathtaking landscapes and learn about the many wildlife that calls this area home. If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure in the moon highlands on a budget, this guide will help you plan your journey along the new Bukurungu trail:
Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail
If you’re looking for the best and oldest way to reach the stunning Margherita Peak on Mount Rwenzori, you should take the core circuit. The mountain is cared for and administered by the indigenous Bakonjo people who reside in its vicinity. The center circuit route is less difficult and more suitable for novice hikers, which is the primary justification for its selection as an acceptable route to the peak.

How many people you’re taking on the trek with and the amount of time you plan to spend in the mountains determine the total cost of your adventure. In general, the Rwenzoris offer great bang for the buck due to their wide variety of routes, which are varied, difficult, and unlike anything else in Central Africa.
We think the Rwenzoris are just as spectacular, if not more so, than more well-known treks like Kilimanjaro, but they’re far more affordable.
The cost of a trek, for two individuals traveling together, can vary from around $315 USD for a three-day walk to almost $2,000 USD for a ten-day expedition. When you have a party of three or more, the prices per person go down a little.

Located in western Uganda, close to the Uganda-Congo border, are the Rwenzori Mountains, sometimes called the Mountains of the Moon. Moorland, bamboo, and verdant, moist montane forest dominate the lower slopes, while the tropical snow summits comprise Africa’s third highest mountain. In December we did a 7 day hike to the summit of Margherita Peak, the third highest peak in Africa at 5100m.
Our trek was supposed to last 8 days but since my bag arrived a day late we had to do day 1-3 in 2 days. It caused a bit of altitude headache but we were fine after that. I recommend doing the hike in 8 days.
Rwenzori Trekking Services Experts was great. We got in touch before the holiday paid online and all our questions were answered promptly. They sent us a packing list and what we didn’t have we borrowed from them. (Sleeping bags). They also provide you with rubber wellies for the boggy sections, crampons, a harness and an ice axe for the glacier on summit day.
We had no previous experience with ice climbing but this was not a problem. They taught us the day before summit day and we got to practice putting on the crampons and attaching the jumar on the rope.
The hiking is tough! Way harder than Kilimanjaro. The trail is either steep, rocky and rooty or flat and boggy. But the flora and fauna and the views are amazing so it’s well worth it.
Our guide Edison was excellent and, as well as being very patient and knowledgeable about climbing skills and the natural environment of the Rwenzoris, he also told us a lot about his language and culture.
We had a group of porters who carried our luggage and food. Everyday when we arrived at camp (simple huts with mattresses) our bags were already there and a stove was on in the dining hut to warm ourselves by and to dry our clothes.
We had a choice of breakfast options; eggs, toast, porridge and pancakes. Lunch was usually made as a packed lunch, sometimes a sandwich with an apple and juice, other times potato salad.
The dinners were huge! Usually rice, pasta or potatoes with a mixture of vegetables in a sauce. The non-vegetarians really enjoyed the spaghetti Bolognese.
At the end of our trek we were asked to give feedback (both positive and negative) we also completed a feedback form. It seems that RTS has been listening to all the feedback they have received over the years because we could hardly think of any improvements.
It is always hard to know what to tip the porters and the guide but we discussed this with other hikers on the trail and agreed on the following; $5 per day per porter and $10 per day for our guide. We handed the total (in Shilling) to the head porter as he knew which porters had been on our trip for 3 days and which ones had been there for seven.
I would definitely recommend hiking with Rwenzori Trekking Services Experts as they manage and maintain their own trails very well and the camps are clean (much cleaner than the two camps we passed that are managed by RMS.

Weismann’s Peak Summiet Exceptional Guiding Service.
As mountaineers, we were very curious about what hiking in a remote location in Uganda would be like. Thanks to the professional guides and team at Rwenzori Trekking Services the trip exceeded our expectations and we had fantastic time. Our guides were extremely knowledgeable about flora & fauna, patient in explaining local culture, terrain, routes and our many questions, and they ensured our climb was a success — both up & down the mountains.
Our food was better than expected — all fresh and safely prepared. The accommodations are as shown on website (you see what you get), and the steepness of the terrain with ladders, stone steps and straight up paths were tough. We brought our own sleeping backs, poles, and rain gear, and were appreciative of having the rubber boots provided by the guide servcie for free. We never did us the boots, however,
We would whole heartedly recommend going with this professional crew. We were a couple suported by 2 guides and 8 porters. Very few people on the trail — really. We passed maybe only 4 other people. So, if you’re seeking a remote, unique experience with a professional team to guide you, this was an outstanding 5 day trek to over 4,600 meters / 15,000 feet summit. Thank you Rasto & Abraham for leading our climb and for the whole crew in making our experince fun, rewarding and safe. Wishing you all much continued success.

Wow, what an adventure climbing Margherita Peak in Uganda (5109m) with Rwenzori Trekking.
In three words: Awe-inspiring, challenging, rewarding.
A punchy 8 day adventure, with spectacular scenery enroute to a high altitude summit. Fitness, a positive mindset and the right equipment definitely needed.
Mountains of the moon sounds like something that exists in a fairy tale book but this vision came alive right in front of my eyes last week.
I literally stepped into another world, full of exotic natural wonders. Candy floss trees, tall totem poles of pine cones, optical illusion plants perfectly formed in hot pinks, yellows and greens. It was magical.
We moved up steeply forested terrain, climbed big boulders, slithered over tree roots, and traversed glaciers.
As our eyes grew wider in amazement, our lungs compressed with the altitude gain. Each step had to be thoughtful and with precision as the rains came down, making the going pretty challenging at times.
A big thanks to Rwenzori Trekking for making this dream a reality.
